Well, we did it! We got a dog! Despite many people telling us it was a bad idea, I just knew we were ready! And so far, I think we did great! Meet Penny! She is a two year old German Shepard Vesila mix. I found her online at a shelter in Veyo. We decided to go meet her while the kids were in school, so they wouldn't get their hopes up if she just wasn't what we were looking for. We knew right away she was ours! She wouldn't come to us at first! Then after we walked her around the yard, she sat next to me and let me pet her. You could tell she was the owners favorite! She is very very sweet. A little timid. She has obviously had a hard life! She won't go to Neal yet! She will warm up to him though!
She is very sweet with the kids!
The owners gave us some tips of how to continue her training. She sits and she follows me well already! I hope she likes it here. She will have a lot of love at our home.
Now I need lots of advice. Misty has been great and very very supportive! Thanks Mist!! She will be an outside dog for now. Maybe one day we will have her sleep inside, but Neal is going to build her a dog house so I think she will be good. She is used to being outside. I need to take her to the vet for a rabies shot and to get her licensed! Any other necessities I have over looked, let me know! Oh I need to know how to prevent fleas!

It's expensive, but the only thing that works. Advantage or Front Line. it's like $50 for 3 mos but worth every dime. People say fleas don't live in St. George because it's too hot. Don't believe them... Puppy used to get fleas every year. The vet will sell it or Petco.
She is really very sweet looking and looks so happy to cuddle with the kids.
You can buy raw hides (try them and make sure she doesn't itch after) but they will help keep her teeth clean. Whatever you do, don't buy any kind of brown bone or hide and let it in your house. It will stain whatever it touches. Only the white ones if they are going to be inside.
I SO SO hope she works out for you guys! I think she looks like she fits right in.
OH YAY!!!!!!! You already know how thrilled I am about Penny but I still had to comment and tell you again! :)
I totally echo everything Misty said, especially when it comes to Front Line for tick and flea prevention - it's the very best. If heartworm is a problem in St. George then start Heartguard too. You can do all of that when you take her for shots at the vet.
I remember something Misty said about good food a while back - I think in a tweet - was really good advice too. It's worth it to get food that is good quality - worth it for several reasons, for sure.
And if she's been outside, you may want to take her for a really good bath and grooming & make sure she has no ticks, etc. between toes or in ears.... places that go unseen. The cleaner you keep her, the more love she will get :)
It already sounds like she's settling in, and you guys are smart to give her time to get used to everyone in her own time - she will start trusting and warming up to all of you as she see how her life is changing for the better.
You've done an AWESOME thing by giving her a new life - the best thing EVER :) CONGRATS!!!!!!!!
Megan :)
She's so cute...she reminds me of scooby doo. hehe In a good way. So no chocolate lab huh? hehe I can't believe I asked you what that was. I thought you were going to be a chocolatier and buy a chocolate business. LOL Silly me.
So Cute! I hope you guys have a lot of fun with her- she looks like a great family dog!!!
